Practice and Research Committee

The Practice and Research Committee assist the membership in understanding, complying with, and utilizing the PA Physical Therapy Practice Act and serves as a resource for research activities, processes, and education for the membership.

The committee does this by assisting the membership in understanding, complying with, and utilizing the Physical Therapy Practice Act. Also, the committee serves as a resource to the board of directors and the membership in providing assistance to support best clinical practice within the state of Pennsylvania. We are made up of committee members chosen by the board of a directors with a chair appointed with representation from members across the PPTA.

If you have a clinical practice related question, please contact the Practice and Research Committee Chair, Mary Ann Wharton, and your question will be forwarded to the appropriate resource person by the committee. The practice Committee may, at times, post questions and responses on the web site or in the newsletter when a topic seems particularly relevant or has been asked multiple times. The questioner's identity would not be revealed in such a format.


  • URGENT: New Telehealth Survey - Use and Reimbursement of Telehealth in Physical Therapy

    Lebanon Valley College, with support from PPTA, asks that you take time to complete this new, important, and updated telehealth survey. The data from this survey is intended to document the use of telehealth and reimbursement for physical therapy services in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and will be useful in future efforts to include telehealth as a standard of care in PA after the COVID-19 crisis subsides.

    The purpose of this survey is to assess the use and reimbursement of telehealth in physical therapy. This survey should be completed by all individuals in your practice who have a role in billing for physical therapy services, including physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, practice owners and staff. Your participation in this research is voluntary. There is no obligation to finish the or even start the survey. There are no known risks in participating with this survey. All information collected will be de-identified and be secured in a confidential manner. This survey will take approximately 5 minutes to complete. The survey was approved by the IRB at Lebanon Valley College.

  • Tele-Vision 2020: Pediatric PT Telemedicine Survey

    Researchers at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia have created a NEW Telemedicine survey! This survey’s purpose is to help better understand the opinions, preferences, and practice of Pediatric Physical Therapist on Oct. 2, 2020. Participation is completely voluntary. The survey will take approximately 5-7 minutes to complete.

  • Federal Regulations and Policies: Information Blocking and Patient Privacy  

    APTA has developed resources regarding new federal regulations and policies designed to improve interoperability and patient access to their health information that impact the physical therapy profession. Please review the following APTA member resources for valuable information for your practice:

    • Webpages dedicated to the topics of health information technology, including information blocking, and patient privacy.
    • A compilation of resources to help individuals learn about information blocking and how to comply with the new rules.
    • An analysis published by APTA that provides guidance on how to comply with the new information blocking rules.
